Eilean Donan
Castle, ancestral home of the Chief of Clan MacRae.
A new Limited Edition print is now available.
This castle is famous for its romantic history and perfect
setting in
the magnificent landscape of Wester Ross. The site was originally
occupied by a prehistoric fort. The first 'modern' castle dates from
the 13th. Century built to the order of Alexander II as a defence
against Norse invaders. It was then owned by the Mackenzie Lords of
Kintail for whom Clan MacRae were Constables. During the 1719 Jacobite
rising, ships from Spain landed 300 Spanish troops there with the Earl
of Seaforth (Lord of Kintail). They occupied Eilean Donan and were
joined by Rob Roy and Macgregors. But British warships sailed up the
loch and bombarded the castle until the Spanish garrison surrendered,
then destroyed the castle. The Rising ended on 10th June with the
Battle of Shiel Bridge. The ruined castle was restored by an American
MacRae descendant between 1912 and 1932 and the causeway was built at
this time too. Now there is a large visitor centre to cater for the
many coach tours. Such is progress!
