This watercolour
painting shows the
lower part of Birnam Glen, just above the railway. Birnam Glen was a
favourite place for the young Beatrix Potter when she spent her annual
holidays in the village. The local postman, Charles Mackintosh, was a
keen amateur naturalist and taught Beatrix much about the geology and
natural history of the area. It was this love and knowledge of nature
that was to lead her to write her successful children's books in later
life. Birnam is also the home of an ancient oak, the sole remnant of
the
Birnam Wood made
famous by Shakespeare in his tragedy "Macbeth".
